Obituary of Roger L Carpenter

Roger L. (Pap) Carpenter, of Philippi, WV, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family on October 16, 2024. He was born on March 11, 1944, in Hemlock, WV., to the parents of Hoy and Kathleen (Zickefoose) Carpenter. They were the parents of thirteen children. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, Arden, John, Kecil and Freeman Carpenter and sisters, Rosalee and Gertrude (Neely). Those left to cherish his memories are brothers, James Carpenter, Ralph (Donna) Carpenter, Wayne Carpenter, Lonzo Carpenter and two sisters, Faye Rhodes and Mary Ann Rowann. Roger married his wife Linda K. Carpenter in March 1970, and they were married 52 years until her death in April 2021. Also surviving are their five children Angela (Rick) Dudley, David Howe, April (Mike) Elliott, Roger (Tonya) Carpenter and Melissa Carpenter; sixteen grandchildren and eighteen great-grandchildren. Roger worked at different jobs throughout his life. The last job he had before retirement was working on gas and oil rigs. He loved to play music with family and friends playing guitar and banjo. The outdoors is where he liked to be, ginsenging  and coon hunting with his dogs and friends. The family would like to extend a special thank you to all their neighbors and friends, Barbour County Family Medicine Dr. Lauren Howdershelt and her wonderful team of nurses and to WVU Hospice. Friends will be received Tuesday, October 22, 2024, from 3 PM to 8 PM at the Poling-St. Clair Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held 12 Noon on Wednesday, October 23, 2024, at the Poling-St. Clair Funeral Home with the Rev. Tim Lewis and Pastor Holly J. Hoover officiating.
